Fanuc CNC data backup

Confused by these terms when it comes to CNC data backup? A diagram to solve

CNC data often need to guide between the machine tool and peripherals to and from, as a long history of CNC manufacturers, FANUC in the iteration of the product, the same term appeared in different ways of expression.

Such as "read", "punch", "load", "restore", etc., enough to make the CNC novice. and so on, are enough to make CNC geeks swoon. What do they mean? First from the FANUC memory.

The current FANUC system involves the use of memory in the process of CNC memory, CNC memory and peripheral memory three categories.

CNC local memory --- FROM / SRAM

The data in the FANUC 0i Mate-D system is stored in two storage areas FROM (32MB) and SRAM (1MB) on the CNC local machine. This is shown in Figure 1.

CNC Native Memory

FROM (Flash ROM) is a fast read-only memory, a ROM that can be electrically erased in its entirety, and the system software (CNC control software, digital servo software, PMC control software) and the PMC sequence program written by the machine tool builder, as well as the P-CODE program, are stored in FROM;

SRAM (Static RAM) is the static RAM, where machining programs, CNC parameters, tool parameters, PMC parameters, macro variables and other data are stored.

The data in FROM is relatively stable and not easy to lose in general (non-volatile), but if you meet the replacement of the CPU board or memory board, the data in FROM may be lost. The data in SRAM is volatile due to the need for battery protection after power failure, so it is very necessary to retain the data.

CNC Working Memory---DRAM

The full name of DRAM is "Dynamic RAM", which translates to Dynamic Random Memory, and DRAM can only hold data for a short period of time. In order to hold data, DRAM must be refreshed at regular intervals. If the memory cell is not refreshed, the data will be lost. When we often talk about how big the memory is, we are mainly referring to the capacity of the DRAM.

FANUC 0i Mate-D system in the DRAM for the CNC working memory, the system startup is the CNC control program into the DRAM area to prepare for the work. DRAM is a buffer memory, after a power failure in the memory of the contents of all lost.

Peripheral memory - memory card / U disk

FANUC 0i C/D, 0i Mate-C/D are provided with PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, PC machine memory card) slot, located on the left side of the display, insert a memory card in this PCMCIA slot can be convenient to the CNC system's Inserting a memory card into this PCMCIA slot makes it easy to back up or restore various data of the CNC system, which is much more convenient than backing up data through RS232 communication of the previous FANUC 0 series. The FANUC 0i Mate-D also has a USB interface for inserting a USB flash disk. As shown in Figure 2.

Peripheral Memory Slot

The purpose of the memory card or USB flash drive (shown in Figure 3) is to back up or restore CNC data files on the CNC's local memory.

Memory card (left) and U disk (right)

The memory card is usually a CF (Compact Flash) card, which is generally larger than the storage capacity of the CNC, and is currently available in the market with a capacity of 2G.

▲ What is a Flash card?

The CF card shown in the left center of Fig. 3 has an interface that can neither be directly inserted into the PCMCIA port on the CNC nor directly read by a PC (personal computer), so it needs to be equipped with a PCMCIA adapter and a USB card reader, which are commonly known as the machine tool 3-piece set (click "read the original article" to buy). As shown in Figure 4.

The relationship of data transfer between the above three types of memory and the English terminology used is shown in Figure 5. The white people are often confused, the figure against a good understanding of it!
